Remarkably 'eggy-beany stuff' included weetabix as an ingredient. To this day no recipe has been found and the three brothers cannot agree on anything about this dish, other than it included eggs, beans and weetabix.
My eyes misted up reading this, in part because your mum sounds like my mum (the protestant thing), in part because life is unfair and you lost her too early. Going to chop some onions.
Thank you. The introductory part of this recipe-sharing piece was both enjoyable and poignant. It brought back memories of my mother who was a no fuss cook too.
Funnily, though the family rules did not go up on the wall, lines like Waste Not Want and some of the other quotes were repeated ad nauseum. The regrets that the author feels about her mother, also resonate, as I can recall Mum foregoing her share of the food on many an occasion. Like the author's Mum, she hardly expressed any food preferences either.
Even today, thanks to that childhood message, I do not waste food and am truly appalled by the amount of food people leave behind on their plates, at feasts. Why not serve less and go back for a second helping? Coming from a country where even one square meal is denied to so many, the idea of functions with lavish buffets seem so wasteful.
