How occupation and war have severed the people of Gaza from their culinary history. Written by Doha Kahlout. Translated by Katharine Halls. Illustration by Narmeen Hamadeh.
I just upgraded my subscription thanks to this article. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. Palestinian food is so amazing. I wish on the inevitable trolls that come on here whatever they wish for the Palestinian people. Free Palestine!!
Unbelievably powerful and awful. My admiration and respect to everyone involved in making this happen. This is such an important piece of (food) writing.
My generation grew up on the Biafra famine which gave currency to much of the terminology and images of famines and lead to the creation of Doctors Without Borders. But there was a simultaneous famine in Palestine that lead to the creation of Anera which was censured out of western media and only surfaced with the assassination of Bobby Kennedy.
A powerful piece of writing indeed. I would be curious to hear about the food enjoyed by the 101 hostages held in Hamas dungeons and tunnels below the Gaza strip. You seem to turn a blind eye to their plight. How many lives could be saved had they been returned home.
The hunger of Palestinians is attributable in no small way to Hamas who hold the Palestinian people hostage as pawns and cannon fodder. Ably helped by UNRWA who simply turn a bling eye or in some case help facilitate the Hamas terror machine. All whilst they both appropriate the funds and aid meant for the suffering civilians.
If you want to see what Arab flourishing looks like in the Land then look to Abu Gosh where communities break bread across religious lines enjoying the fruits of the land under democratic and representative rule in Israel.
One day may we all enjoy the fruits of our lands without the fear of tyranny. We could start by acknowledging there narrative of the other. Without doing so many more will be condemned to eat the bitter bread.
.. never have I read such a load of 'sympathy journalism'. The notion of palestinian, is really everything that is Israeli or Jordanian. George Deek, a palestinian christian, tells 'it' as it is.

Thank you so much for this. Really looking forward to the rest of the series.
