I was very fond of British Rail sandwiches in the 70s, particularly the egg and tomato. Made with regulation white bread, the sandwich was incarcerated in tightly wrapped clingfilm which pressed the egg, tomato and bread into one cohesive, damp whole. Gorgeous.
Hilda Leyel’s baked bean sandwich is one of my favourite fillings for a dainty tea time morsel for the vegetarians …. And they always struggle to guess the ingredients!
