Excellent article by Stella Swain. There is much practical information available regarding the LSA but this is the first article I have read about it that seriously considers the social and political motives involved. I believe the main reason that the Thatcher government closed it down was due to the fact that it was seen by the Tories as a socialist experiment and ran completely against their mantra of profit at any social cost, which, of course, still prevails today and is at the root cause of most of the current problems facing our country.

I interviewed Jeremy King recently, and he said something I haven't been able to shake: 'If you sit opposite someone, it's confrontation. If you sit side by side, it's much more intimate.' He meant it about restaurant tables. But he was really talking about everything.

Great article about when there were programs that allowed for human dignity. Adam Smith couldn't have imagined the financial swaps market and crypto which create only wealth - no value.

What an interesting article. I knew nothing about the LSA. With a desire from government this could happen again but I doubt it will given the lack of public money available. Food for thought nonetheless
