I'd like to state my support of Vittles for having the courage to write about the racist and genocidal actions of the Zionist state against Palestinians and in particular against Gazans, despite the denials of the obvious - even when the obvious has been stated by officials on television and in press conferences, or recorded and shared by their own soldiers - elsewhere in this comment section.
I also note that none of the said denials and accusations of bias are specific or amount to anything more than blanket denials and ad hominem attacks on the author, because apparently pointing out that the offenders in this case are the offenders at all is "offensive" etc.
I’ve clearly said I find the actions of the Israeli state abhorrent and nothing can justify it.
Framing Zionism as an extremist ideology is not helpful. Zionism to me is about Jews having a right to self-determination, and having at least some right (not at the expense of Palestinians) to land that they are indigenous to too!
It’s amazing how people supporting an oppressed minority (Palestinians) fail to be sensitive about the context of the Holocaust or historical Jewish persecution in the founding of Israel. This does not legitimise the actions of the Israeli state. Yes I have a right to be offended when people use Zionist as a slur in this way or ignore historical context like the neighbouring Arab states invading prior to the Nakba.
I believe in peace and building bridges between two sets of victims. The irony of posts like yours is that you solidify Jewish feelings of fear and embolden Israel to act in “self-defence”.
It's not a slur, it's factual - it is a Zionist state, established on the basis of Zionist ideology, and openly identifies as such. Zionists themselves claim it's not a slur.
The context of the Holocaust, if anything, makes the Zionist ideology look even worse - that genocide was European from beginning to end and wasn't created or enforced by any Palestinians, and yet it's Palestinians who paid the price and were ethnically cleansed from their lands.
Palestinians shouldn’t have to pay the price I agree. But your comments have some innacuracies.
1) Jews are not all European
2) Jews historically lived in these lands before Israel (Palestinians aren’t the only indigenous ethnic group)
3) Neighbouring Arab states voted against Jews getting some of the land and subsequently invaded.
I really urge you to recognise your own role in perpetuating the cycle of hate and violence. As I said, Jews reading this will feel you are not validating their pain and intergenerational trauma.
Being empathetic towards Jewish experience foes not preclude you from believing in Palestinian liberation and self-determination. You are part of the problem.
Zionism is not a belief shared by all Jews and criticism of it is not always about Jewishness. You can
just as easily say that conflating zionism and jewishness is contributing to the cycle of violence and hate that Jews experience. Zionism and Palestinian liberation are fundamentally incompatible.
but you are clearly advocating for zionism and also implying that all Jews share the same view. I am not advocating for Hamas? nobody here has mentioned Hamas except you? it seems like you think Hamas' existence is a justification for genocide of Palestinians?
I should point out that you've misrepresented my words - at no point in my comment did I say that Jews were all European - what I said is that the genocide was. Which is a fact, no Nazi was Palestinian.
I would urge you to reflect on your points above and question why you believe that my pointing out the openly racist ideology that Zionism is in practice or pointing out that Israel is a settler state is somehow 'not validating' Jewish pain and intergenerational trauma. The Holocaust was committed by Europeans, I do not see why this justifies the idea that Palestinians had to be the ones to pay for it through the loss of their homeland.
if you see an article about the collective punishment of palestinian people by the Israeli military and you immediately start talking about hamas then it's very clear why you think what you think
the contents of the Hamas charter? The same Hamas that Israel funded and provided assistance to, decades ago? Taken from sources including The Atlantic, which justifies the killing of Palestinian children by calling them "legally killed children"?
doesn't make Israel and its government any less racist and genocidal, or justify starving the population of Gaza. Which was the point of the article. But thanks for making yourself clear.
This article is the reason I signed up and paid for a subscription to Vittles, incredible writing and one that speaks to truth. Exposing the realities which never gets any airtime. Please keep doing this. You're ruffling the Hasbara and the propaganda machines.
Seeing some of the comments here that totally excuse genocide, racism, and justify some of the worst crimes of humanity in the modern day against a besieged people, an apartheid system and with all the military might money can pay for. Just go away, we don't need your lies, dark evil sadistic and racist presence. Colonialism will be defeated and you will be cast back into the shadows of irrelevance.
Thank you Mira and Vittles for this piece. The starvation suffered by Palestinians in Gaza is one steeped in a history of racism, apartheid, and illegal occupation.
In no way would I want to deny the experience of the horrors of anyone living in Gaza right now, or the active choice that the Israeli military have made in disregarding and dehumanising Palestinian life, but this article is both inaccurate and offensive. This framing of Zionism only serves to reinforce dangerous polarisation and perpetuate the cycle of hate, violence and loss of innocent life. Most Jews I know would shudder reading it.
that link is an opinion piece and wishful thinking, at best (speaking of "accommodations" for non-Jewish citizens, i.e. rendering them second class citizens in a theocracy) but also acknowledges that present-day Zionism is not the 'steeped in secular' ideology the author seems to wish for and certainly not in practice (based on the frequent practice of armed land theft and illegal settlement in the West Bank, where there is no Hamas).
This framing of Zionism only serves to assuage the consciences of London's most gullible rubes, and perpetuate the cycle of milquetoast handwringing while accomplishing absolutely nothing of value.

Apologies I misread your point about Europeans.
However, you have ignored my point about Jews being indigenous to that land and about neighbouring Arab states invading in 1948.
this article is not about hamas, it is about the israeli occupations war crimes. you seem to be lost

yes, I would say it's quite clear. The dog-whistles are very loud!
Thank you for exposing the speciousness of the propaganda on which you rely, it speaks for itself. My point stands, and will continue to do so.

your parroting my words at the end of each of your comments doesn't make your arguments any less non sequiturs.

where are the inaccuracies? what is offensive?
See my comment above. Maybe read this article too.

Brilliant piece - reminded me of this which was recently published, referring to a different context: Eco-coloniality and the violent environmentalism of the UK–France border https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10.1177/02637758241264415
Would love this to be made open access
